Larkin in the New Zealand News

Waikato's Aaron Larkin closed in on the world No1 men's slalom waterskiing spot by winning his second major of the year.

Larkin captured the UK leg of the Pro Waterski Tour, beating current world champion Thomas Degasperi (Italy) in the final pairing of the head-to-head final at London's Princes Club.

Larkin is now ranked second and could climb to the top spot with one event left in California next month.

We love WaterSki Magazine. Todd Ristorcelli and the crew are always being creative with their contests, so we like to participate. This spring the contest was for the best waterski related ink. Since RadaR Team Shredder Trent Finlayson is the undisputed king of inked skiers, we jumped in the contest with a set of his Vice Gloves and Limited Edition Green Strada Handle for the winner. This ink belonging to Dave Cech (BC, Canada) is certainly of Terry Winter's undeniable style. We're definitely feeling this piece! Nice coverage...

Sir Swini, The Sweetest

All of you know Matt Rini. Who couldn't if you're living anywhere near the zip code of water skiing. Yes, he has his own Gold Medal from the World Championships as member of Team Canada back in the day when they took the Title. He has so many more coaching Championships to his credit we won't even start to list them. He's an amazing dad and a husband and the best coach going right now. That's the short story.

What is understated even more than his humble presence leads on; is his dedication to skiing and advancement from a few different directions. He's so great for our sport. He converses with the very best skiers in the world when they have brand new ideas they need a solid opinion on. He is Rossi's number one guy in all of our ski design. No one person rides and gives more input and response than Swini. His daily approach to ski design keeps a level headed focus to our overall theory. He tests gloves and boots and handles and vests and combos and tubes(fun!) and screws and plates and you name it! There is no way we could manage to get a new product on the water without him. He is our formula for success.

The other thing you should know is that after nearly a year of grueling pain and a major knee reconditioning, Swini is back on the water. Back where he loves to be. Back to remembering what he and all of his students love so much... making turns.

It's been a long year. We welcome him back to the water.

We thought you would like a preview of what will be in print in the upcoming WaterSki Mag. This shot was taken on the Duwamish River in South Seattle. The building Trent is shredding is an old Boeing manufacturing plant. It's actually built out over the water. Some of the windows were busted out and it felt like the perfect setting for Trent to get a good feel of his Vice captured on reel. Kate Berschauer took the pic from a precarious spot perched under a bridge. The water was frigid and far from clean. It was a "no wake zone", so we had to get the shot quickly and get on our way. Thanks to Jim Maxwell for letting us run his boat in the river and Matt Black for steering us through one of the coolest ski shots we've ever seen.

Whit is the best in Canada... Again!

You know she's good... we know she's really, really good. Evidently Canada agrees with us. Once again, Whit has been named Queen of it all for her home country. On top of that Whitney just earned her certification to be a Strength and Conditioning Specialist. So she runs 39 and she's smart? We're so happy to have her as a part of the family! We know Whit's not even close to being done either. Look for bigger scores and more school announcements coming soon...

The 21-year-old from Cambridge, Ont., who is the reigning world champion, was named Wednesday as Water Ski and Wakeboard Canada's female athlete of the year. Ryan Dodd of Olds, Alta., picked up the top male award.

“This season was about building and preparing for the next world championships (in 2011),” said McClintock. “I feel like the summer was very successful in that I set a Canadian record in tricks and was consistent in slalom.”

McClintock dominated the national championships with gold medals in all four disciplines (jump, slalom, tricks and overall)

One of Chris Rossi's annual end of the waterski season traditions is one long Eastern Canadian deer hunt with his dad Mark, brother Tony and long time hunting buddy Scott. The boys drive 12 hours north from Rossi's home in Vermont, then get into a boat that drops them on their island home for nearly 2 weeks. Nothing but small gas heat and generated power for the boys as they track monster deer and live off the land. There is obviously no cell or internet service, so it cost Chris his first loss of the season in our company fantasy football league (lost to Danny Harf). Thats right, he was undefeated through 9 weeks of play. This guy's obviously got more skills than just slaying buoys.

The Champs Perspective... Moomba

It’s fair to say that the legend of Moomba being the toughest pro water ski event lives on!!!

Moomba threw up all kinds of nasty conditions, and then some. With thunderstorms on Saturday afternoon throwing down golf ball sized hailstones, which closed down the river and stopped the tournament for the rest of the afternoon. With the enormous amounts of all the extra storm water, the river was bearing its sharp teeth in monumental fashion.

After learning about the women’s slalom final results, where most of the girls couldn't run 32 off, it was evident that it was going to be another tough day at the office.

And the men's slalom final proved to be no different........

As I tightened the laces of my Strada bindings on my new 67” Strada stick and took a deep breath, Parson's 1.5@38 was the score to beat.

I ran 32 down current with little trouble, but not taking for granted that this was going to be the easy part of the day.........

35 up current was some of the hardest conditions I have skied in a very long time. It was here that the drama started to unfold. As I approached one ball there was a beer bottle roughly 3-4 feet on the turning side. As you can imagine this completely took my focus away as I tried to avoid hitting it and consequently I fell at two ball.

From the water I immediately protested to the tower judges, but communication was made pretty tough as the commentators and crowd were making so much noise! After what seemed to be an age the boat came back and picked me up with the news that I had been given a re-ride.

It wasn't until later that I learned that it wasn't the bottle that I had got me the re-ride, in fact there was a 5 foot branch caught on the beer bottle which amazingly one of the tower judges had taken a photo of!!!

The next challenge before readdressing the slalom course was to get warm and re-gather my focus. Luckily I managed to take full advantage of my luck and just get through 35 and returning at 38 to get 2.5 with a good crash to take the lead.

When Marcus ran 3@35 I was pretty happy with a podium finish. It wasn't until Will fell with 1.5@35 I started to get the jitters. Parrish customarily ran 35 and made the rest of us look ridiculous, it was at this point I started to get changed as in my mind it was over. To my amazement with Parrish only needing to stand up at 3 ball, it proved to be too difficult for him and he fell with a score of 2.5@38. So for the 3rd time in my career, I was now in a sudden death runoff with C.P.............

I was out first at 35 and ran it down current with very little trouble, as I am very quickly learning, this is happening on all of my passes on the new Strada. My thoughts quickly moved to the next pass of 38 off, knowing that if I could get to 3 ball it would put some real pressure on the world record holder. I laid everything on the line at 1 ball trying to give myself as much time to deal with what 2 ball was putting out. Unfortunately it didn't pay off, I couldn't get outside 2, and immediately my reaction was that I had just handed it to C.P on a plate.

By the time C.P turned 3 ball at 35 he was in a bit of trouble, but nothing he couldn't handle......... I thought.

As he appeared from behind the jump on his way from 5 to 6 it took me 4-5 seconds to register that he wasn't making any attempt to get back to the gates and therefore had gone inside 6! It was at this point that apparently I leapt 3-4 feet in the air and took stock of what had just happened.

After 6 finals in 8 Moomba tournaments, I was finally the Moomba Masters Slalom Champion!!!

A massive thanks to all the people that have supported and believed in me over the years.

This is the year of the Strada!!!!

Ski Trip to RadaR 2010

We love skiing. Everything about it. Especially this time of year when something comes across the computer here at headquarters in Washington. Something that makes us wish for warmer days filled with short rope and great stories lakeside at our namesake lake high atop a hill in Woodinville. The attached link is just that. Canada, Costa Rica,Portland and Seattle. Pretty good Month.

Well, it's been a really solid month riding a few different mediums in a few different continents. After leaving my brothers in the powder of Central British Colombia, it was off to San Jose, Costa Rica to get back on the water. Ten days of riding Jim Kilsdonk's Glassy fresh water course, putting the Strada through some early 2010 sets got the season started off right. I was able to put a few different skiers of different levels on our new shape, and everyone was as fired up about Rossi's new shape as I am.

From there it was off to Portland for the Portland Boat Show. Thanks to everyone who stopped by the AWS booth to talk skiing, watch some football and check out our '010 madness. It was a killer weekend unveiling RadaR's latest and greatest to the local rippers.

Then it was off to Seattle to get some of my last days of snowboarding in for the winter. We hit a few days of objectionable conditions, but had an epic day at Crystal with Sully, Whooz (of the the great Huzinator fame...See ronixwake.com and hit up the softgoods for details) and myself. We had fresh turns from first chair til out. I got in 19 days this year so far, but its water from here on out for me.

The rest of the week was spent at the factory doing up some 2011 graphics with Higgy in our art department.

An afternoon of January Lake Sammamish wake surfing and an unreal Sunday of football closed my trip.

Orlando next week, then Australia for some clinics and the Moomba

Masters.

Utah Updates

It has been a week in which the valley (Salt Lake City) is submersed in inversion. When high pressure holds over Utah, all the smog rolling in from California combines with the smog generated from Salt Lake City and creates a mess of grossness. Fortunately, being up in Alta, we are above the inversion and experiencing mostly sunny days. It gets a little depressing in Alta when it does not snow. The conditions at Alta Ski Resort are actually fairly good. The groomers are fast, most of the off-piste snow is smooth (very little moguls), and the skier traffic is not to crowded. The back country skiing right now is quite bad. Most of the South East-North West slopes have been hammered by the sun. What didn't get sun damaged was effected by a wind storm we had up here early last week. Basically, there is not a lot of great powder to be found.

My friend and RS1 rider John VanGieson came to visit for a few days (first picture). Had a great time touring around Alta, trying to find the best snow. I'd say we fared much better than most, so it was a success. Too bad he left yesterday as this coming week is supposed to go off with snow. Starting Monday we are expected to get snow for the entire week. I will post some pictures later in the week if it gets deep. Until then, take care and enjoy every minute of life!

Well it's officially winter here in Utah. We have not had the kind of snow that past years have brought us, but it's still real good. Last week brought us a storm that produced 30+ inches of light and fluffy powder. Alta went off with many over head face shots. On days like these, I love cruising the resort with my friends. Everyone is riding such a natural high it's like we are all drunk with energy. In usual fashion, the storm rolled on through and left us with bluebird skies and great backcountry touring conditions. I snapped these two photos while out skiing. The first is of a couloir in Big Cottonwood Canyon. Finding the entrance was a little sketchy, but once in the chute, it was one of those runs you feel totally satisfied with after. Pizza and beers were the call after that day. The second picture was from two days ago. This is the Emma ridge that looks down into Alta. The snow was like velvet and we had a fun descent. Guess what? It's snowing as I write this, so it's time for me to cut this short and go make some turns.

Day two put me and my twin Trav at kicking horse. The conditions kept us from first chair to last. A late morning storm came through, filling in the morning's lines. Late afternoon the sky broke and gave us great light for the rest of the day. For real, after riding snow for thirty years (i started as Soon as I was walking) today was easily my best to date. Trav was steering me through some lines that I had no idea I could handle. Steep and narrow by my standards. Plus a new board courtesy of Adam at propagandashop.com has given me way more confidence. I Now believe the rocker hype. Got me thinking , the ole adage of it's not the ski but it's the operator only goes so far. New gear and new technology will make you ski better. It's a fact.

We are over in London for the holidays. Landed to a few solid inches of snow. Paige has seen snow before but this is Meg and Will's first play in it. They went nuts and were out in making snow balls for a few hours yesterday. Just saw that the new website is looking awesome, Sully and Adam great job. RadaR team members Whit and Jay are running my school this week thanks for covering for me. Thanks guys! Whit congrats on IWWF Female Athlete of the year...a no brainer in my books! Day one and it's me and my twin Trav at Sunshine, just outside of Banff Alberta. Decent conditions, more like late January than December I think. Good base with plenty of soft on top. Trees were holding the goods for us today, and I'm lucky enough to have a brother who is also a guide. He spent the day pointing out lines for me, making sure I had fresh, without getting broke off... This guy is the shit.
On to Golden BC now. It's dumping right now, and we're staring down Seven days at Kicking Horse.
